Tooth and Truth

A wise philosopher once wrote that a person would trade the whole world for any relief from a toothache. I thought that a weird comment until I have had a toothache since last week and now think he might have been right.

Granted, I have been on antibiotics and a pain killer this weekend and will probably have to have the tooth pulled when I see a dentist today, but pain clearly focuses the mind on one thing only–getting rid of it. It makes me realize the truth that I am terribly like other people, a toothache being a common human reality that impacts every person who has one.

You may think you are different from other people, but you are not. When it comes to pain, we are terribly alike. If we could carry this wisdom into everyday life, the world would surely be a better place.
